Getting a Lift in St Croix…

So other than renting a car on our beautiful island, your only hope of getting from point A to point B is to try and fetch a taxi (not an easy task) or rely on the kindness of new friends. Many people are afraid of “driving on the left” and/or don’t want the expense of renting a car when they anticipate hanging out at their hotel or rental unit for a good portion of their vacation. Some come expecting to use Uber or Lyft, which unfortunately, are not present here.

The lack of reliable transportation after dark here is a knife in the heart to the territory’s tourism economy. There is no central number to call for a taxi, no way to order a taxi online, and no reliable taxi service after dusk anywhere. Very few, if any, taxis take credit cards.

This fundamental lack of convenient transportation is obviously a big problem, so why hasn’t anyone fixed it? Many Virgin Islanders believe taxi drivers – and taxi medallion owners, who are not the same people – are too powerful a lobby. Both the Legislature and executive branch agencies have a long history of bending over backwards for the taxi drivers, to the detriment of the tourism industry. It will be interesting to see how this develops.

In the meantime, should you come to the island, if you want to rent a car, please do so WELL IN ADVANCE of your trip. This is not one of those places you can just walk up to a car rental booth and expect to rent a car on the spot. There were actually NO CARS available for rent for the entire month of March!!! (things are better now). And if you choose not to rent a car, note that we have a list of reliable Taxi drivers on our website (www.stcroixislandlife.com), under RESOURCES, Service Providers. Put those taxi names/numbers in your phone before you come, so they will be handy!
