Moving to the USVI? Bring a car or Buy a car?

Having a car in St Croix is pretty much a necessity. There aren’t many places you can live on the island where you can walk to places and get the basics to make life work. Many people ask which is the best route to take (no pun intended) with regard to getting a vehicle here….and there are many variables that impact the answer! If you choose to bring your car, you’ll have to get it to a port, and then wait till it gets delivered in STX and pick it up there. If you live close to one, that’s probably not a problem, but if you don’t, that can sure be a time-consuming hassle!

Then you have to consider what it will cost to get your car here, and look at that in relation to its current value. You can get a real-time estimate of your cost to import at www.caribbeancartransport.com.

You might consider selling your car where you currently live, and buying a new or used car once you get to St Croix. If you want a used vehicle, you can sometimes find a good deal. People leaving the island most times will want to sell their car here rather than ship it. There are several Facebook pages where people in St Croix advertise their vehicles (and many other things):

St Croix Vi Buy Or Sell Your Stuff 24/7

 buy and sell in STX

Saint Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands 🌴 Buy and Sell Locally Online 🌴

You have to become a member of some of these pages, so do this as soon as you are contemplating a purchase (or have something here you want to sell).

Craigslist is an option, but there are so many scams, one has to be very careful.

And there are care dealerships here that would be happy to outfit you with a new (or new to you) vehicle:

  • Metro Motors in Orange Grove
  • Streker Motors in Kingshill
  • Island Toyota of St Croix in Kingshill
  • Centerline Car Rentals of St Croix (they have fleet sales)

Just remember, if you get here without a car, you can’t rely on Uber or Lyft to get around here. We do have taxis, and some “routs” for buses and taxi services, but those options can be somewhat unreliable and frustrating here! It’s de islands, mon!!

And if you’re considering a bike or motorcycle, think long and hard about that. Our roads are filled with potholes and ruts, and driving a motorcycle or even a bicycle can be dangerous, especially if you are not used to driving on the LEFT!!
