Can organizations make remote work, work? This was the topic at a recent conference and Natasha Hawryluk of HR Analytics presented evidence from 260 software engineers that suggests it can! Effective collaboration apparently has more to do with a team’s communication style than where workers are located, according to Northeastern’s Christoph Riedl and Carnegie Mellon’s Anita Williams Woolley. What’s key to success is what’s now being called a “bursty” communication style. This is characterized by rapid communication of ideas and feedback followed by longer periods of silence.
So this is what you have to reassure your boss(es) that you will do, and point to the research to show that this is just as effective, if not more-so, than working from an office. Be able to answer the questions “when and how will you be available? Can we count on you to be “connected” and respond promptly?
Help your employer design systems that facilitate bursts of communication and collaboration among team members, so you can achieve higher quality collaboration while balancing employees’ desire to work remotely. This creates innovation, no matter where the office—or the water-cooler—is located!
